EPITHETS AS A MEANS OF THE PERSONAGE’S EMOTIONAL STATE REPRESENTATION IN THE TEXTS OF ENGLISH FICTIONAL WORKS

چکیده
The aim of the present research is to analyse in detail and describe functioning such lexical stylistic means as epithet used nominate personage’s emotional state texts English fictional works. has been done within framework functional linguistics, namely, text linguistics. established implies finding solutions a number tasks: 1. peculiarities usage metaphorical epithet; 2. intensification increase expressiveness epithets; 3. define characteristic features epithets formed with help nouns; 4. outline difference inverted epithets. material our investigation includes works outstanding writers: D. H. Lawrence (The Lovely Lady other stories), К. Mansfield (Selected J. Salinger (Nine Stories). Epithets serve that widely characterize personage. As result research, we have several types express mainly negative emotions (anger, repulsion). Metaphorical give nominated emotion brighter characteristics, thus, contributing full exposure image. In combination may form chains. latter intensify perception by reader. postposition toward noun they identify intensifiers (mainly ‘so’) can not only (or even their shades), but also attitude events / phenomena. Inverted are expressive stylistically marked colloquial. rule, expressed adjectives participles. Fewer adverbs. There cases fixed when nouns function epithets, prepositional phrases ‘of’.
